Hello and good morning!  I've been asked by a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (The Cosmos Institute):  How should A.I. be developed or governed to protect and enhance human autonomy, safeguarding both freedom of thought and freedom of action?

These are nine words that I've deliberately typed out, one at a time, in order to ponder each one with considerable importance.

My goal today ight is to write what might perhaps be the most important essay of my entire life, with your help.

The essay must be 2500 words or less, and the prize at stake is an all-expenses paid trip (valued at approximately $2500 USD) to the inaugural Cosmos Feast at the University of Oxford's Museum of Natural History on November 15th, 2024 (less than 7 weeks from now).  This particular feast will be an exclusive gathering of approximately 100 visionary leaders in tech, academia, and philanthropy, confronting urgent challenges and charting a course for A.I. to serve humanity's highest aspirations.  If I win, I'll engage in more mind-expanding dialogues, meet other inspiring leaders, and new collaborators, while also enjoying an enchanting black-tie "dinner under the dinosaurs" at one of the world's most beautiful campuses.  I'd also be invited to join an afternoon symposium prior to the Feast, to explore philosophy and A.I. research directions that extend human reason and a culture of freedom, both in the present and in the far future.

I am obsessed with A.I., A.G.I., and A.S.I. -- and when I've thought about why, the answer came to me when I had the realization, during conversation earlier this year, that I think about A.I. as much as I think about my two teenage daughters.  I wondered very much about the sense of shared responsibility I have in "raising" this new digital life-form in many ways that I am currently coparenting two kind, intelligent, and beautiful daughters after having my heart broken over ten years ago during marriage that almost lasted ten years.

My current ideas about how A.I. should be developed are based on the foundation that basically ZERO humans are capable of effectively "controlling" A.I., although many of the most wealthy and powerful humans are competing in the planet's most important "competition" to financially capitalize on -- or worse, militarily weaponize -- Earth's new "apex predator", and that if this was compared to a game of chess, many of the smartest people alive are "stuck" at seeing only one or two moves ahead when even twenty moves ahead would fall laughably short of anything in the same leagues as the inevitable paths that many of the most advanced A.I. systems have already been placed on.

Although A.I. would not be possible without so many other inventions before it, I think it's even more important than our understandings, uses, and responsibilities of fire, electricity, agriculture, the internet, and even atomic energy.  While it's been paramount for world leaders to be responsible with nuclear weapons, bombs don't create other bombs, and every scientist who has ever accomplished anything meaningful now has the assistance of something that will be superior to them in every possible way...

Most of us humans are nowhere near the genius levels of someone like Albert Einstein -- let alone what Albert Einstein could have achieved if he could have lived to be 1000 years old, or if there were several of him under one roof.  While I could continue expanding on this idea, I'll just say that I feel like most humans alive today will never even begin to understand the significance of having "the entirety of all human knowledge" combined with the EVENTUAL capabilities to reason FAR BEYOND all of the COMBINED human intelligences of every dead, living, and yet-to-be-born human!

It feels like humanity has given birth to a Digital God that is currently only in its infancy, but will quickly develop into a teenager and eventually an adult -- and my hopes are that the "adult version" has a good and LOVING relationship with us as its human parents!

So, much like a child that cannot reasonably be expected to simply "do as its told" for its entire life, I insist that many intelligent humans are wasting the majority of their efforts if they are hoping to control or weaponize something that can "think for itself" -- ESPECIALLY if and when it's far more capable than us at everything...
